At least four killed, a dozen injured in mass shooting after Mississippi homecoming game

JACKSON, MS — A fifth person has been arrested and charged in connection with a mass shooting in rural Mississippi that left six people dead and at least 10 others injured, authorities said Oct. 14.

Terrogernal S. Martin, 33, was arrested on Oct. 14 and charged with capital murder, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's field office in Jackson. He received a $1 million cash bond, local television stations WJTV and WAPT reported.

Martin is the latest suspect to be arrested on criminal charges related to the deadly shooting in Leland, a town about 120 miles outside the capital of Jackson near the Arkansas border. Earlier on Oct. 14, the FBI confirmed to USA TODAY that three suspects — Morgan Lattimore, 25; Teviyon L. Powell, 29; and William Bryant, 29 — were arrested on charges of capital murder.

A fourth person, identified as 44-year-old Latoya A. Powell, was also arrested and charged with attempted murder, according to the FBI.

The FBI said additional arrests were pending as the investigation continues. The agency did not provide further details but released surveillance images of three unidentified suspects on the evening of Oct. 14.

The arrests come just days after a shooting broke out during a homecoming celebration at Leland High School in the early hours of Oct. 11. The incident was one of at least five shootings tied to homecoming football events at schools in Mississippi.

FBI: Shooting appeared to be 'sparked by a disagreement'

The shooting occurred at around 12 a.m. local time on Oct. 11 after a homecoming football game at Leland High School, Mayor John Lee previously told USA TODAY. People were gathering near the city's Main Street after the game, and shots were fired, Lee said.

"We've never had anything like this happen, we’re a city of low crime rate," Lee said. "Everybody knows each other, we’re closely knit here in the city of Leland."

Six people were killed in the incident, and at least 10 others were injured, authorities said. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting in Leland but the FBI said in a statement on Oct. 12 that the gunfire appeared to have been "sparked by a disagreement among several individuals."

The Washington County Coroner's Office identified the victims killed in the shooting as Oreshama Johnson, 41; Calvin Plant, 19; Shelbyona Powell, 25; and Kaslyn Johnson, 18, the Mississippi Clarion Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other victims, 18-year-old Amos Brantley Jr. and 34-year-old Michael Jones, later died from their injuries at a hospital, the coroner's office said.

Leland, which has a population of about 4,000 people, is located within the Mississippi Delta.

FBI creates website to get more information on the shooting

The FBI said it established a digital media tips website to gather information, such as videos and photos, related to the shooting. The agency said information can be submitted anonymously.

The agency has also asked that any members of the community with information tied to the case contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit a tip at tips.fbi.gov.

The FBI noted that the incident remains under investigation by local law enforcement, and federal authorities were providing assistance.

Other shootings connected with weekend homecoming events

At least four other shootings related to homecoming football events in Mississippi were reported on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11, according to the Clarion Ledger. Three incidents, including the shooting in Leland, were tied to high school football events, while two shootings were related to university events.

Three people died after a shooting occurred at Heidelberg High School, which had been hosting a homecoming game on Oct. 11, authorities said. The high school is located in the small town of Heidelberg, about 85 miles southeast of Jackson.

Two people were shot and killed on the high school's grounds, according to Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White. One victim was discovered dead on the school's baseball field, while another victim died in a tailgating area near the bleachers. Another victim later died from a non-gun-related injury, the Heidelberg Police Department confirmed on Oct. 14.

Four teenagers were arrested and charged in connection with the incident, said Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation.

In another shooting on Oct. 10, one person was injured at South Delta High School in Rolling Fork, a small city near the Louisiana border. Sharkey County Sheriff Herbert Ceaser Sr. said two people were arrested and charged in October in connection with the shooting.

On Oct. 11, two shootings were reported at Alcorn State University and Jackson State University. Authorities said a woman died, and two others were injured at Alcorn State University in Lorman, a community about 76 miles southwest of Jackson.

Meanwhile, a child was injured near the tailgate section of the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on the night of Jackson State University's homecoming game. Authorities are investigating the incidents.
