LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - The need for blood is constant, and on Tuesday, Louisville’s first responders rolled up their sleeves to make a blood donation. It’s blood they may one day use themselves to save a life.
In April, Louisville Metro Emergency Services became the first EMS agency in Kentucky to deliver pre-hospital blood product in the field.
That blood helps during critical situations in the field.
For example, if someone gets shot, EMS can begin transfusing blood in the ambulance instead of waiting until they arrive at the hospital.
While it’s no guarantee the blood donated today will go the program, and those involved say it’s already having a large impact.
