If you asked the IRS for six more months to work on your 2024 tax return, you’re about to run out of time.

And while most IRS operations are closed and nearly half of its workforce furloughed due to the ongoing government shutdown, the deadline to file your return hasn't changed.

Taxpayers who requested an extension have until Wednesday, Oct. 15 to complete and submit their returns without penalties. Some taxpayers impacted by natural disasters , like wildfires in California and flooding in Texas, will have even more time to file.

However, with the government shutdown, some IRS services could be impacted.
