My husband and I are from the Midwest, so we celebrate Sweetest Day on the third Saturday in October. We exchange candy and cards, though the day wasn’t meant for romantic partners.

Sweetest Day was started in 1921 by Herbert Birch Kingston, an employee at a Cleveland candy company who distributed candy to orphans and those less fortunate to help lift their spirits. A group of confectioners deemed this act of kindness “Sweetest Day.”

The idea grew over the years to include not only candy but also small gifts and flowers for friends, lovers and colleagues. Even Hallmark joined the fun by creating Sweetest Day cards in the 1960s.
