Waffle House servers with the Union of Southern Service Workers launched a four day strike in Orangeburg to demand an end to the company’s mandatory “meal credit” deduction , which charges them for food whether or not they eat, and inappropriate behavior from both customers and management.

Workers are also demanding fair scheduling, $25 an hour in livable wages, and fair treatment at work.

According to the union, Waffle House automatically deducts at least $3 per shift from workers’ paychecks for a “meal credit,” regardless of whether they have a break or eat a meal. Orangeburg workers are joining other Waffle House cooks and servers who say this unfair deduction, taken even when they are denied the right to take food home, takes away the money workers rely on to get by.
