The Town of Huntington will begin the deconstruction process of the Peter Crippen House in Halesite on Thursday, October 16, 2025. The event will begin with a press conference and historical overview of the house and contents. The pre-deconstruction event will begin promptly at 10:00AM.
The Crippen House, located at 61 Creek Road in Halesite, was built in 1657 and functioned as a grist mill until 1672. In 1674, it was moved from Mill Lane to Creek Road and converted into a residence. In 1864, Peter Crippen, an African American who was born a free person, purchased the house; it stayed in the Crippen family until the Town purchased it in 2019. Over time, it has fallen into disrepair.
The house will be deconstructed, and original portions and salvageable pieces will be donated to the H
