Despite his immense talent, Conner Mantz doesn’t speak about his goals. Mantz wanted to set the new American marathon record, finish the race sub-2:04 and finish top three on Sunday when he raced the Chicago Marathon.

While Mantz narrowly missed out on a sub-2:04 and top-three finish, he accomplished the most memorable goal: He’s now the American record holder in the event.

Mantz crossed the finish line in Chicago in 2:04.43, good for fourth place. Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda won the men’s race with a time of 2:02.23. Hawi Feysa of Ethiopia won the women’s race with a time of 2:14.57. Mantz ran a lot of Sunday’s race alongside Kenya’s Alex Masai, who finished in third.
