Durgapur Assault Case: Police Clarify Details of Incident

In a significant development in the Durgapur medical student assault case, West Bengal police have ruled out gang-rape, stating that only one of the five arrested suspects is involved in the physical sexual assault. Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Choudhary confirmed this during a press conference, emphasizing that the investigation into the roles of the other suspects is ongoing.

The incident occurred on the night of October 10, when a 23-year-old medical student from Odisha was allegedly assaulted in a forested area near her college. Following the complaint, police arrested five local men, while also detaining a male friend of the victim who had accompanied her for dinner that evening. Choudhary noted, "The friend of the victim girl who was also present at the place of occurrence... his role is also not beyond doubt. We are also investigating his role."

Investigators have been reconstructing the crime scene with the arrested suspects and the victim's friend. They have gathered technical and scientific evidence, including mobile phones and clothing believed to be linked to the crime. The police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the college, which reportedly shows the victim returning calmly with her friend, raising questions about her account of the events.

The victim initially told medical staff that three men were involved, but later claimed five men assaulted her. Police are scrutinizing these contradictions, as well as the circumstances surrounding the recovery of her mobile phone, which was allegedly taken by the assailants. The police have stated that the investigation is still in progress, and they are awaiting forensic reports to further clarify the situation.

The five suspects, who have no prior criminal records, are currently in police custody, and the investigation continues as authorities seek to establish the full facts of the case.
