BUFFALO, N.Y. — Winter heating bills are expected to climb this season. National Fuel says the average household could pay about 16% more compared to last year.

Western New Yorkers are bracing for higher heating bills again this winter. National Fuel is projecting a 16% increase compared to last year, they say this is driven by traditional WNY weather and rate adjustments.

For the five-month heating season which spans from November to March, the average national fuel customer can expect to pay around $677, or about $135 per month. That's up from $585 last winter.

The company said the projected rise is partly due to a predicted weak la Niña, which often brings colder and snowier conditions to the region.
