PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 16-year-old girl has died after being shot inside a North Philadelphia home on Tuesday evening, police said.

The shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. on the 2400 block of North Colorado Street.

According to investigators, the teen was found in a second-floor bedroom with a gunshot wound to the stomach. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said police recovered one spent shell casing inside the room. Authorities believe the shooting may have been accidental.

"We are not sure if someone else was handling the firearm when she was shot or if she was handling the firearm and shot herself," Small said.
