SARASOTA, Fla. ( WWSB ) - The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Spoto High School student Tuesday for allegedly bringing a firearm to school.

At 11:15 a.m. on Oct. 14, school administrators and an Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office School Resource deputy detained a 16-year-old after receiving a tip that he had a firearm on campus.

After searching his backpack, deputies found a 9mm pistol with a loaded magazine, the sheriff’s office said.

“I am thankful for the quick actions of our deputy and the school staff. Their response stopped a potentially dangerous situation before anyone was harmed,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement.

The teen was arrested and charged with one count of possession of a weapon on school grounds.
