Belleville city council approved an agreement Tuesday with a new doctor to set up practice in the city to reduce an ongoing shortage of family physician in the city.
Mayor Neil Ellis informed council during regular session that through Belleville’s municipal Family Physician Recruitment Program, the city has now secured 27 new doctors in this term of council bringing the total of doctors since it was first implemented In 2006 to more than 60-plus doctors.

An estimated 15,000 people do not have a family and with up to three longstanding doctors set to retire in the near future, the crisis is expected to only worsen without continued doctor recruitment by the city despite the fact the responsibility lies with the Ontario government.
