OMAHA, Neb. —

It's Fire Prevention Month, and the Omaha Fire Department has some reminders.

They said the most common calls are for food left on the stove, improper disposal of cigarettes and, as we get closer to winter — space heaters.

Officials said the one thing you should remember: "close before you doze."

"Getting people to remember to close the door before you go to sleep. It sounds like something small, but it's actually a big thing, because what it does is it gives you time to get out of the home if there is a fire," Jason Gentry, with the Omaha Fire Department, said. "There's actual studies that proves that it saves lives."

Officials urged residents to check the batteries in their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
