KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — City councilmembers approved the first reading of a resolution that would expand investment in affordable housing projects by using a chunk of money from a potential increase to the city's sales tax on Tuesday evening.

According to the resolution , the amendment to the Affordable Housing Fund would mandate the mayor of Knoxville to propose funding affordable housing development projects with the lesser of $10 million or 22% "of all additional revenue generated from any local option sales tax increase."

The additional funds "shall be calculated on a per fiscal year basis and shall be subject to the availability of funds," according to the resolution.
