Friday will mark the fifth anniversary of the shooting death of a Good Samaritan killed in Phenix City and authorities aren’t giving up on finding his killer.

Crime Stoppers 215-STOP on Tuesday announced a $5,000 reward in the Oct. 17, 2020, slaying of 35-year-old Lamar Dontaye Whittaker.

Whittaker was trying to help a stranded motorist when, investigators say, he was shot in an apparent case of mistaken identity.

The shooting happened about 12:30 p.m. that Saturday near 10th Avenue South and Fourth Place South in Phenix City.

Officers found Whittaker lying on against a curb next to a broken-down vehicle, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses told police that a man walked up to the vehicle, fired several shots at Whittaker, then ran away. Police later learned that Whittaker was not
