WASHINGTON — One day after President Donald Trump signed a document to formalize the first phase of a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., announced a plan to nominate the president for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The GOP House leader's announcement also came a day after Israel’s speaker of the Knesset called Trump “the Middle East’s peacemaker in chief” and proposed nominating him for the Nobel Prize.

“Together with my friend Speaker [Amir] Ohana of the Israeli Knesset, the equivalent of our Congress, we’re going to embark upon a project together to rally speakers and presidents of parliaments around the world so that we will jointly nominate President Donald J. Trump for next year’s Nobel Peace Prize,” Johnson said at a news conference Tuesday.
