Good morning! I'm Nicole Fallert. Do you love to be scared on Halloween?
Quick look at Wedensday's news:
- Americans face a flattening job market.
- A man was exonerated. Now, he's in ICE custody.
- The Dodgers look unbeatable.
Struggling to find a job?
You're not alone: In the latest publicly available Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report, most industries were flat or shrank, with employers adding only 22,000 jobs in August.
Labor market cooling: Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said yesterday there were "significant downside risks" in the labor market, while inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target. And the ongoing government shutdown means key public jobs data remains delayed.
- Are we in a recession? Twenty-one states and D.C. are already in a recession, experts told USA TODAY. In effect, companies will do everything before resorting to layoffs, including stopping hiring.
- Fighting robots: Job seekers in many fields vie to fit within an AI world (unless you have these "AI-proof" jobs).
- There is a bright side: Health care and social assistance sectors reported job growth — and there are still opportunities if you know where to look.
South Carolina measles outbreak rises
A South Carolina measles outbreak has grown to 16 people, including five new cases from schools with low vaccination rates, state health officials said Tuesday. A dozen cases have been concentrated in Spartanburg County, where two elementary schools have nearly 140 students quarantining at home because they weren't vaccinated against measles.

Exonerated. And now detained by ICE.
In early October, after 44 years behind bars for a murder he apparently did not commit, Subramanyam “Subu” Vedam was ordered released. But a day later, before he had even set foot outside the Pennsylvania prison where he lived for decades, Vedam was taken into ICE custody. Now, the 64-year-old is on the verge of being sent back to a country he last lived in as an infant. His family members told USA TODAY they are devastated by the likelihood that they will lose Vedam yet again.
Are Black voting rights under siege again at the Supreme Court?
Part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act could be in jeopardy in a case, Louisiana v. Callais, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Wednesday. The justices will debate whether states can create legislative districts that comply with the Voting Rights Act without violating the bans on racial discrimination in the 14th and 15th Amendments — changes to the Constitution passed after the Civil War to protect the rights of formerly enslaved people.
