COLUMBUS, Ohio — Luke Altmyer has played nearly 2,000 snaps of collegiate football, meaning the senior quarterback has seen plenty across his time with Ole Miss and Illinois.

However, while facing Ohio State football Saturday, he failed to spot a game-wrecker headed his way.

Illinois was facing a 2nd-and-10 late in the third quarter of the Big Ten matchup when Altmyer caught the snap. As he scanned to his left, Altmyer’s offensive line stood tall against a trio of rushing defensive linemen, but they forgot about Jermaine Mathews .

The junior cornerback slashed toward Illinois’ backfield, emerged from behind a blocking offensive tackle and reached his right arm out just in time to poke the ball away from Altmyer.
