LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Jefferson County Board of Education has approved an independent assessment to be launched to identify the systemic and operational factors behind the district's current budget challenges.
Superintendent Brian Yearwood recommended the proposed audit.
With JCPS facing a $188 million budget shortfall, Yearwood said the root cause appears to stem from the influx of funds from the federal government during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We added programs, positions and things like that," Yearwood said. "When the funds ended, we just did not have a plan to actually make cuts."
Yearwood said JCPS is now making those cuts and requested an audit to find some of the areas to cut.
