INDIANA – Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is partnering with OpenAI to let users browse and purchase items directly through the popular chatbot ChatGPT. This move is seen as an attempt to leverage AI to gain an advantage over rival Amazon in online shopping.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told CNN that the current online shopping model—a “search bar and a long list of item responses” — will be transformed by AI, offering a more personalized, multimedia experience.
The feature should launch this fall, offering a wide range of products from Walmart’s catalog, as well as clothing, entertainment, and food from third-party sellers. Items from Sam’s Club will be integrated shortly after.
The partnership utilizes OpenAI’s new “Instant Checkout” tool, which enables direct in-chat purchases
