The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) has confirmed chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a hunter-harvested buck from Prentiss County during the 2025 Velvet Season, marking the county’s first detected case.

MDWFP noted that Prentiss County is already part of the North Mississippi CWD Management Zone, so this detection does not change any existing management zones or regulations.

Since February 2018, Mississippi has recorded 447 CWD-positive white-tailed deer across 18 counties. MDWFP is urging hunters to submit deer for testing at established freezer drop-off locations or participating taxidermists.
