U.S. women's national team legend Christen Press has announced she will retire at the end of the 2025 NWSL season.

The Angel City FC forward made the announcement on Wednesday in an interview with "Good Morning America."

"I'm retiring from professional soccer, and I've decided that this is my last season and my last few games," Press said. "I feel a mix of everything. There's yes, there's relief, there's joy, there's excitement, there's fear, there's so much grief. I have so much grief, a part of me, a piece of me, I'm losing her."

Angel City is on the brink of elimination from playoff contention, meaning Press likely has just two games remaining in her career: a home match against Portland on Sunday and a Nov. 2 game at Chicago.

Press will leave the sport after making 155 appearances for the USWNT, tallying 64 goals (ninth in USWNT history), and 43 assists while winning two World Cups.

Her last USWNT appearance came in the 2021 Olympics. After a break from the game, Press suffered a torn ACL in June 2022 that kept her out for more than two years.

Press returned to the field in August 2024 after enduring four surgeries on the injury. She has made 20 appearances for Angel City this year, starting two games and scoring one goal.

"I thought I would wait until I didn't want to play anymore," she said. "But I realized that time's never going to come and I can play, and my body can keep going. And I think it was really important for me to make this decision for myself before that became a different reality."

Press enjoyed a decorated club career that began in 2011 in the WPS with magicJack. She went on to play in Sweden with Göteborg and Tyresö before returning to the U.S. to join the then-Chicago Red Stars in 2014.

The forward also represented the Utah Royals and had a brief stint with Manchester United before returning to her hometown of Los Angeles to lead Angel City ahead of its expansion season in the NWSL.

Press ranks eighth in the NWSL for all-time goals scored with 49. She was named in the NWSL Best XI four times during her career.

Press announced her retirement just three months after her wife and fellow USWNT legend Tobin Heath also confirmed her retirement.

The pair co-founded a media company together and host "The RE-CAP Show" podcast. Press admitted that Heath's decision to retire influenced her own decision.

"She would absolutely hate me saying this, but a lot," she said. "I think it is time for my family to move on to our next chapter, we're going to be a part of this game forever, but it's time for it to look different for us."
