Michael van Gerwen will miss the Players Championship Finals for the first time in his career.

The seven-time winner has confirmed he will not play in the final three ProTour floor events ahead of next month's tournament.

It means he cannot finish in the top 64 on the Players Championship Order of Merit and will not qualify to appear in Minehead.

Van Gerwen made his debut at the Players Championship Finals in 2009 and has competed in the event every year since.

His chances of appearing had been hanging by a thread following Tuesday's event in Wigan.

Mighty Mike was beaten in the opening round by Dom Taylor, leaving him needing to reach the final on Wednesday to keep his qualification hopes alive.

However, he has now announced he will not take part in Players Championship 32.
