SPENCER, Iowa (KTIV) — As Iowa celebrates National Pork Month in October, recognizing the 147,000 Iowans who work in pork production, Clay County is investing in the next generation through a unique program that brings farm life to children who might never otherwise set foot on a farm.
The Friends of Clay County Youth Program provides weekly hands-on experience with hogs for kids who live in town and do not have access to raise their own pigs, addressing what program director Greg Lear sees as a critical gap in understanding.
“The biggest thing we are missing in my opinion is we’ve got three or four generations that don’t realize where their food comes from,” Lear said. “And this gives them a prime example of where their food does come from.”
