Pirates outfielder Tommy Pham was named a finalist for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award in left field on Wednesday morning, joining Ian Happ of the Cubs and Kyle Stowers of the Marlins.

It’s certainly deserved.

Pham ranks second among NL left fielders in defensive runs saved, according to FanGraphs with 5, trailing only Mt. Lebanon's Happ (9).

That total ranked fourth on the Pirates behind Ke’Bryan Hayes (16), Henry Davis (8) and Jared Triolo (7), a Gold Glove winner last fall.

Where this might break down for Pham involves a couple of things.

His Fielding Run Value (per Baseball Savant) was minus-3. Among those with at least 500 innings played in left field, seven in the NL ranked ahead of Pham, same for FanGraphs' calculation of defensive runs above/below average.
