In 1985, the Boston-based organization International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War received the Nobel Peace Prize for organizing the medical community against nuclear weapons.
The IPPNW, only five years old at the time of the award, was founded by cardiologists Bernhard Lown and Yevgeny Chazov from Newton and the Soviet Union, respectively. The Herald reported in 1985 that the organization was created because the doctors realized the significance of Soviet and American physicians coming together on the issue.
