Donald Trump has issued a threat which could have major consequences for next year’s World Cup.
The US president said he could prevent Boston from hosting matches at the event as part of his crackdown on Democrat-run cities in America.
Boston Stadium is scheduled to host seven games at the competition, which kicks off next June.
But according to the Associated Press, Trump said: “We could take them away. I love the people of Boston and I know the games are sold out. But your mayor is not good.”
A statement from the office of Michelle Wu, the Democrat mayor of Boston, said: “Boston is honoured and excited to host World Cup matches, and we look forward to welcoming fans from around the world to our beautiful city, the cradle of liberty and city of champions.”
