A woman was airlifted to the hospital on Tuesday after the vehicle she was driving went off the road and down an embankment where it hit a large tree in Torrington.

The crash occurred on Newfield Road just south of a bridge near Sunnybrook Park around 2:15 p.m., according to Brett Johnson of the Torrington Police Department .

Johnson said a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek was being driven north by a 42-year-old woman when the vehicle drifted into guardrails and struck eight to 10 posts before breaking through wires and leaving the road. The vehicle went down an embankment before colliding head-on with a large hemlock tree, according to Johnson.
