BOSTON (WWLP) - Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Secretary of Education Dr. Patrick Tutwiler have condemned President Donald Trump's decision to fire nearly 500 U.S. Department of Education staff over the weekend, citing concerns about the impact on students' access to essential services.

The firings, which occurred during a federal shutdown, included 466 staff members laid off on Friday. Governor Healey criticized the move, stating that it would deprive children of vital mental health care, tutoring, and special education services. Secretary Tutwiler emphasized the critical role of the Department in ensuring equal access to public education and warned that the firings would harm students, particularly those with disabilities and from low-income backgrounds.
