California issued new regulations for artificial intelligence and automated decision systems used in employment practices effective Oct. 1.
The California Civil Rights Department first announced the new rules in a June 30 news release as a way to combat bias in automated systems in hiring and other employment decisions.
The department used existing anti-discrimination laws and applied them to the use of AI, the release says.
While the regulations do not outright ban the use of the systems and technology in hiring or employment decisions, the department has warned that use of them could open companies up to legal liability and reputational damage if found to be discriminatory.
