IOWA (KCAU) — A man has died while serving prison time for murdering a girl in Sioux City in 1993.

The Iowa Department of Corrections said Matthew Hallum, 63, was pronounced dead on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. He died in a hospice room at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center.

In 1997, Hallum was found guilty of first-degree sexual abuse, attempted murder, and first-degree murder for crimes committed in 1993. According to the Associated Press via a 1997 report from the Argus-Leader, the victim was a 15-year-old named Tanya Rubottom. He was ordered to serve a life sentence related to the circumstances of her death.

The Department of Corrections did not state Hallum's cause of death.
