North Liberty will transition from its twice-daily, fixed-route bus service to on-demand paratransit in the coming months.

The North Liberty City Council showed a willingness to shake the current transit route in favor of an on-demand service on Tuesday, Oct. 14, again backing a goal identified in the city's approved 2024-2026 Strategic Plan.

"For me, its market demand drives service," council member Brent Smith said. "And we've shown consistently that the demand just isn't there for the cost."

North Liberty contracts with the City of Coralville for a bus route that circulates around the heart of the city twice a day, with first stops at 6:30 a.m. and final stops shortly after 6 p.m. North Liberty paid Coralville about $103,000 in fiscal year 2025 to run the bus service. A written sta
