WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump still plans to meet Chinese President Xi in Korea, Treasury Secretary Scott Bassett said, even after announcing a new $100 billion tariff on Chinese exports.

This marks a change from last week, when Trump said he saw no reason to meet with Xi. The tariffs respond to China’s tighter export controls on rare earth minerals, which are needed for many U.S. products.

Officials are monitoring the situation as it develops, and lawmakers such as Senator Maria Cantwell are seeking more details from Treasury about the administration’s plans.
