MOORHEAD — Clay County’s pumpkin composting program begins the day after Halloween.

According to a release from Clay County, the “Take Jack Back” program will run from Nov. 1-14. During that time, the county will have composting bins for jack-o’-lanterns at recycling drop sites across the county.

More than 1 billion pounds of pumpkins end up in landfills every year, the release said. Pumpkins cannot be composted with yard waste because they are considered food waste.

Through the program, Clay County has composted more than 270,000 pounds, the release said. Pumpkins to go Doubting Thomas Farms.

Decorations like candles, wax, paint and glitter must be removed from pumpkins, the release said.
