BROOKINGS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A 19-year-old man from Brookings is in custody after reportedly physically abusing a 3-month-old baby.

According to the Brookings Police Department, Bailey D. Melchor subjected his 3-month-old baby to physical abuse by reportedly throwing, striking, squeezing, and choking the infant over a period of time.

Melchor was charged with abuse or cruelty of a minor under age 7 and aggravated battery of an infant, which are both felonies.

The infant is being treated for multiple fractures of the ribs, along with a possible hemorrhage of the brain.

Melchor remains in custody at the Brookings County Detention Center.
