Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece has declared that crime levels are “too high” in his city, prompting the City of Melbourne to take direct action.
"Melbourne is a safe city, but we do have a crime level which is simply too high, and we need to be doing all we can to get it down," Mr Reece told Sky News’ host Chris Kenny on The Kenny Report.
He said the council was stepping in to support law enforcement by doubling the number of CCTV cameras across the city and deploying uniformed community safety officers (CSOs) onto the streets at the end of this month.
"We don't have all the levers of the state, but we can be part of the solution," he said.
"We're also introducing community safety officers, CSOs, employed by the City of Melbourne in uniform on the streets from the end of this month."
