Dozens of reporters have turned in their access badges and exited the Pentagon rather than agree to a new media policy that restricts how journalists operate.

Reporters working at the Pentagon had been asked to sign a pledge to refrain from reporting information not authorised for release by the US Department of War, formerly the Department of Defense.

The US government has called the new rules "common sense".

News outlets were nearly unanimous in rejecting the new rules imposed by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that would leave journalists vulnerable to expulsion if they sought to report on information — classified or otherwise — that had not been approved by Mr Hegseth for release.

Only the conservative One America News Network signed on.
