One year ago, Alex Sleeman was doing routine work on his hobby farm in the Great Southern town of Denmark.
The general practitioner and his son Pablo were pulling out trees on their property, 400 kilometres south of Perth, using a vintage tractor once owned by Dr Sleeman's grandfather.

"We connected [the strap] to the wrong place … I knew I was connecting it to the wrong place, but I didn't have a shackle on me to connect it to the right place," he said.
"It was such a small tree, I was like 'this won't matter.'"
