The Victorian Auditor-General says state government agencies need to speed up flood-related claims and not miss out on Commonwealth funding.

The points are among four recommendations laid out in a 40-page report evaluating the Victorian government's response to the October 2022 floods .

The auditor-general questioned whether relief and recovery efforts were sent quickly enough to people in Rochester, Shepparton, Echuca and Maribyrnong and if the money spent was justified.

"It was clearly obvious that 988 homes [in Rochester] were inundated with water during that 2022 flood," Rochester Flood Mitigation Group member Tracie Kyne said.

" It took so long for funding to come through to those who needed it most and were desperate for assistance. The red tape was just beyond ridiculous. "
