Students in Victorian primary schools will have screen time limited in class and parents will not have to pay for laptops under major changes to the state's education guidelines.

The reforms aim to curtail the amount of time students spend on laptops, which the government said had accelerated since the pandemic.

Children in prep to year two will have minimal access to screens, while year 3 to 6 students will spend no more than 90 minutes a day on screens.

Schools will also be required to ensure all students have access to a laptop, which the government said would mean parents would not have to buy the devices.

Education Minister Ben Carroll said it was a major change to the way schools use screens in the classroom.
