GREENVILLE, S.C. —

New tariffs on furniture went into effect Tuesday, impacting prices at area stores and customers in Greenville. The Trump administration activated 10 percent tariffs on softwood timber and lumber and 25 percent tariffs on certain kinds of furniture, like cabinets, vanities, and upholstered chairs and sofas.

Edward Johnson's family has owned Greenville's Old Colony Furniture for decades.

"Yeah, it's going to raise prices," he said, noting that most of his stock is American-made.

He added, "People are moving away from the uncertainty of imports, the higher prices. And I think we're just very thankful to be well-positioned with American-made. And, they're investing in their companies in Hickory and throughout the eastern part of the United States."
