IOWA CITY (KCRG) — Ben McCollum has settled into his role as Iowa’s men’s basketball coach, spending months observing his team in practice. What he’s witnessed has shaped his outlook for the Hawkeyes.

“There’s a natural expectation that you’re just going to go win the Big 10, and it’s just going to show up because that’s what we did in the Missouri Valley Conference,” McCollum said. “I’m not saying we’re not going to compete. I’m not saying we’re not going to be there or be good. But it is hard to be good.”

McCollum brings a wealth of experience coaching teams with varying styles of play, from some of the fastest-paced to the slowest in college basketball. His approach with the Hawkeyes will largely depend on his point guard, Bennett Stirtz, who has been with the program throughout the t
