MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) -- Mahomet's new police chief is officially sworn in. After 24 years with Urbana Police, Dave Smysor is stepping into the role and replacing the previous chief Michael Metzler.

Smysor, a Mahomet resident of 18 years, is working to grow what the department has already built up. To him, that means prioritizing community engagement and keeping mental health at the forefront of his mind.

"A lot of what officer wellness means taking care of your people and breaking down some of the barriers we've had in the past," he said. "I think we are getting much better as a profession as far as understanding that some of the traumas you have to experience in this line of work. It's ok to ask for help."
