Two people were rescued from a boat in distress in the Niagara River near the Peace Bridge early Wednesday afternoon, a Buffalo Fire Department spokesman reported.

Fire personnel responded to a call about the boat taking on water about 1:20 p.m., but fire department rescue vessels were unable to reach the boat due to shallow water, the report said.

According to the report, a private boater offered help and took fire personnel to the distressed boat.

The two people on board, who were wearing life vests, were brought to shore safely and taken to Erie Basin Marina for evaluation, the report said.

Also responding to the scene were personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Buffalo and the Buffalo Police Department.
