The Michigan Department of Transportation will host a virtual public hearing next week to discuss new rules for roadside facilities like rest stops, welcome centers, and parks.

The department says it’s considering draft rules that, among other things, would prohibit staying at a rest stop for more than 48 hours, alcohol, and camping. Overnight parking would still be allowed for weary travelers, but extended stays would be banned.

The proposed rules would apply to all MDOT rights of way, including 61 highway rest areas, 82 roadside parks, 267 carpool lots, 23 scenic turnouts, and 14 welcome centers. MDOT says the rules are intended to improve safety.

The virtual hearing will be next Wednesday, October 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
