Michigan’s largest health insurer shelled out nearly $100 million a day in 2024 for the medical and prescription drug expenses of its 4.5 million customers — and about $4 million of it was at a loss.

The bill for the $1.44 billion loss Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan sustained in 2024 is coming due, following a combined $1.35 billion in losses over the previous three years. This means employers and individual customers will face double-digit premium hikes in 2026.
