CLEVELAND — Across Cleveland , students are taking a stand against gun violence — pledging to be part of the change.

The effort comes just days after a deadly shooting in the Garden Valley neighborhood , where a 16-year-old boy was killed and a 14-year-old was critically injured. On Wednesday, students across city schools and recreation centers joined a nationwide "Day of National Concern" to reject gun violence and encourage peace.

At Estabrook Recreation Center, dozens of students recited a pledge led by longtime anti-violence activist Yvonne Pointer, state leader for Voices of Black Mothers United.

"I will never bring a gun to school," Pointer told the students — who repeated each line in unison. "I will never use a gun to settle a dispute."
