The Prime Minister's former international advisor has been appointed as the director-general of National Intelligence, marking the first time a woman has held the top job.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed Kathy Klugman will lead the Office of National Intelligence, following the end of Andrew Shearer's term .

Mr Shearer has been chosen as Australia's next Ambassador to Japan, a role he's expected to start in early 2026.

Most recently, Ms Klugman was the principal international advisor to the Prime Minister, a role she had held since 2022.

Mr Albanese noted her previous experience as a deputy secretary at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
