ChatGPT is about to get a little more… grown up. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that the company will soon allow "erotica" and other mature content on ChatGPT—but only for verified adults. The update will roll out in December, alongside new age-gating tools designed to ensure minors are kept out of mature spaces.

“As we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults,” Altman wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

It’s a notable policy shift for OpenAI, which has long taken a cautious approach to emotionally sensitive or explicit material. But with new safety and mental health tools in place, Altman says the company is ready to “safely relax the restrictions.”
