An American tourist was killed and another seriously wounded in a stabbing in Portugal early Wednesday after a heated verbal exchange turned deadly.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. in Cascais — about 20 miles west of Lisbon — while the victims were returning to their hotel, according to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã .

The confrontation began as an argument between three suspects and the two victims before escalating into a violent fight, the outlet reported, citing the Portuguese Judicial Police. 3

During the altercation, one of the suspects allegedly went to his car, retrieved a bladed weapon, and slashed and stabbed the two tourists.

The attacker “struck the victims several times in the face, arms, and back” before fleeing the scene, officials said.
